Double Standard, anyone?

So, Mitch Daniels is driving around in an RV he did not purchase and traveling in a jet that is not his. But it is okay for him to do such things, because they are state donations.

  • This news comes on the same day that this became available from the Governor’s ethics commission:
  • Ethics Newsletter

  • Here is one example of the recently prosecuted “cases of fraud and/or waste" as detailed in the newsletter:
    Facts:
A superintendent at a Department of Correction (DOC) Facility accepted a hat valued at $20.00 from two employees of Prison Health Services (PHS). PHS has a contract with the DOC to provide the services of physicians, psychologists, nurses, and health care administrators to DOC facilities. Accordingly, PHS has a business relationship with DOC. The superintendent also accepted two meals from PHS employees valued at $9.99 and $6.69.
    Sanctions:
    A. A civil penalty of One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) to the State Ethics Commission. B. A written reprimand from his supervisor following the Commission’s issuance of a final report in this matter. C. Attendance at a classroom ethics training sponsored by the State Ethics Commission.

Here is the best part. Gov. Daniels says gifts from people who want something from the state are not acceptable. Right now in conference committee, Monaco Coach Corporation (which donated the RV) is pushing legislators to give tax breaks to RV companies. They claim that the increased sales tax in Indiana has hurt their RV sales. Monaco wants a tax break. But I’m sure they donated the RV to the Governor out of kindness and generosity.

I couldn't stand him before and I REALLY can't stand him now. If you're going to enforce all these new policies, you can't break them yourself without punishment. What makes me sad is that very few will actually hear of this.

The thing about the hat fine is that state employees are being singled out and made examples of. One guy got fired because he was using his state computer to check his fantasy football team. It really makes for a paranoid work environment.
