Women's Equality: How Far We Have Come since 1955

I received the article below (taken from Housekeeping Monthly, 1955) as facetious "recommendation" yesterday. That joke aside, it is a stunning look at the status of women only a half-century ago, when our mothers/grandmothers were raising us/our parents.

The picture is probably too small for most to read. So here is the transcription:

The Good Wife's Guide (1955)

-Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready, on time for his return. This is a way of Letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favourite dish) is part of the warm welcome needed.

-Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

-Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

-Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives.

-Gather up schoolbooks, toys, paper, etc. and then run a dustcloth over the tables.

-Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

-Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces (if they are small), comb their hair and, if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part. Minimise all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer, or vacuum. Try to encourage the children to be quiet.

-Be happy to see him.

-Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

-Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first – remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

-Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner, or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

-Your goal: Try to make sure your home is a place of peace, order and tranquility where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit.

-Don’t greet him with complaints or problems.

-Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.

-Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or have him lie down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

-Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

-Don’t ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

-A good wife always knows her place.

The text is from an e-mail that's been bouncing around the web for at least 8 years.

From scopes.com...

"We know the graphic reproduced above (supposedly from the 13 May 1955 edition of a magazine called Housekeeping Monthly) is a fabrication: It didn't first appear until well after the "How to Be a Good Wife" list had begun circulating via e-mail, and it's clearly a mock-up produced by adding the text of the e-mail around an image taken from a 1957 cover of John Bull magazine. (The image itself even bears an "Advertising Archives" legend along its side, indicating its source.) http://www.advertisingarchives.co.uk/gallery_johnbull.php

As for the text itself, nobody has turned up the infamous textbook that supposedly included these ten steps. The list is often attributed to Helen B. Andelin's book Fascinating Womanhood, first published in 1963 to provide instruction in "The Art of Winning a Man's Complete Love," but no such list appears in that work.

Wanna BUY an old obsolete nuclear power plant? YES? OK, then, just VOTE for Obama.

The nuke industry is planning to build 29 new nukes. ONE of them in North Carolina. (Those Plans are Far advanced - with licensing hearings already scheduled for the first few)

(See Map at NY Times LINK: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/31/washington/31nuclear.html?_r=1&oref=slogin )

Excelon Corp, (largest nuke operator on the planet) headquartered in Illinois, has been one of Obama’s largest contributors ever since he first ran for office.

Obama voted FOR the Cheney Energy Bill of 2005 (H.R. 6) - which ENABLED the nuke industry to start planning to build nukes. (No new nukes have been built for the past 30 years because the banks would not loan the money - too risky.)

The Cheney Energy Bill solved that problem for them by GUARANTEEING Taxpayer PAYBACK of any of the nuke loans that default (The Congressional Budget Office rated the risk of default on the nuke loans at 50% or greater).
GE, Westinghouse, CHENEY, the nuke industry are planning to Reap $BILLIONS --- RISK_FREE from building those nukes, AND, $BILLIONS more from the HIGHER Electricity RATES produced by nukes ... for the next
30--40 years.

Here’s the kicker: Obama has been getting BILLIONS of Dollars worth of FREE Sales PROMOTION *Campaign HELP* From: NBC & MSNBC, and CBS … because GE owns NBC/MSNBC and Westinghouse owns CBS.

(If you check on the NY Times MAP you will see that GE & Westinghouse are planning to build the reactors at most of the planned nuke sites.)

Clinton Voted AGAINST the Cheney Energy Bill & says we can consider nuclear in the future IF they can MAKE IT CHEAPER, and, find a way to dispose of the nuke waste Safely.

That’s the reason WHY the MEDIA has been rabidly PUSHING to SELL you an Obama & slamming and smearing the Clintons on TV all day everyday.

COPY & PASTE and Pass the Word to everybody on your email list and to any blogs, TV, Radio, newspapers you can....particularly in all the upcoming PRIMARY States.

p.s. McCain is pro-nuke too & voted FOR the Cheney energy bill. Its the NEXT Big Cheney MONOPOLY POWER ----Energy Ripoff---- just waiting in the wings for Obama OR McCain to get elected.

“GOING FROM COAL TO NUCLEAR IS LIKE GIVING UP CIGARETTES TO TAKE UP SMOKING CRACK”.

We Need NEW Clean Renewable CHEAPER DE-Centralized, off the Grid, NON-Monopoly energy.

Does it make a lick of Sense to CONTINUE building an extremely complex, expensive, and dangerous technology -Nuclear power plants ... to SPLIT ATOMS ... to Make STEAM? --- When we can INSTEAD, for example, use newer versions of Solar Power Towers like the one in Odeillo France:

http://www.stacey.peak-media.co.uk/Pyrenees/Odeillo/Odeillo.htm

http://www.technologystudent.com/energy1/solar4.htm

Mirrors concentrate solar energy on a Tower. At the focus point the temperature is hot enough to melt steel. The concentrated heat from the sun can be used to make STEAM. Simpler, Cheaper, Safer.

All the good Energy Technologies suitable for our future will be starved, neglected, UN-Developed in order to GET the MONEY for Nukes & MAINTAIN the existing Large -Scale MONOPOLY Power Energy Grid - While most of the rest of the world becomes Cleaner, Greener, And RICHER than U.S.

Say NO to NUKES ... go Forward, NOT BACKWARD

Obama supporters, hold onto that HOPE Obama's selling because that's all he's GOT when it comes to getting those CHANGES Made.

Obama claims 7 years experience in the Illinois legislature - Working Across the Aisles, Bringing people together to get good CHANGES passed -as exemplified by 26 good bills with his name on them.

A Chicago reporter says all 26 bills were passed in ONE Year.

http://wweek.com/editorial/3418/10516/

EXCERPTS:
But what’s interesting, and almost never discussed, is that he built his entire legislative record in Illinois in a single year.

Republicans controlled the Illinois General Assembly for six years of Obama’s seven-year tenure.

Then Emil Jones Jr. (became the Senate Majority leader), He became Obama’s kingmaker.

Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

During his seventh year in the state Senate, Obama ... sponsored a whopping 26 bills including many he now cites in his presidential campaign when attacked as inexperienced.

Working Across the Aisles/ Making CHANGES = ZILCH

Taking Credit for Other People's Work/ INTEGRITY = ZERO

HONESTY = ZERO
