No Information Regurgitation Machine Left Behind

The Star published a beautifully written piece on No Child Left Behind on Sunday. This is my favorite part:

“Emphasis is on facts, not analysis. The mediocre teacher triumphs because conformity guarantees that only one answer is applicable, and ambiguity is synonymous with indecision. Education becomes a regurgitation process, inspiring only those who enjoy spelling bees and waiting in line…In this world, there is no room for debate or new ideas, and to suggest that NCLB needs a tuneup is a sacrilege. Schools are to teach children what to think, not how to think.”

It makes perfect sense. There are many people who take everything at face value and question nothing. These are the people that will swear Saddam Hussain helped plan 9/11. They believe that our freedom is protected when the FBI listens in on our cell phone conversations. They believe George Bush represents the interests of blue-collar workers. They know that women are inferior to men because Eve ate the apple in the Garden of Eden and therefore deserve to make 20% less than men for doing the same job.

And they do not hold government accountable, thus allowing Americans to be manipulated by the majority party. Mission Accomplished, GOP.
