Women's Sexuality Held Hostage

51% of Indiana residents oppose an abortion ban, even if it makes an exception for the life of the mother, according to a new poll released today in the Star.

47-year-old James Hatfield of Fort Wayne supports the ban, and has this to say: “If you don’t want to have a baby, don’t have sex.”

That’s easy for him to say. Nobody is asking him to abstain from sex in order to improve his quality of life.

Of those who support abortion bans, a vast majority would never be affected by it at all. In the poll, 6% more men than women favored a ban. Senior citizens favored the ban 10% more than those under 55.

Senior citizens do not have unwanted pregnancies. Men do not have unwanted pregnancies. Yet they are the ones who oppose abortion, given that they are exempt from needing it as a last resort.

Modern science has given us so many forms of birth control that women need not make the decision between asexuality and motherhood. They only need to be taught how to use birth control and encouraged to use it consistently.

The hard-line, abstinence-only view of James Hatfield and his cohorts is only good for one thing—using a woman’s natural sexual urges against her to force her prematurely under the yoke of motherhood.

Forgive me, Jezebella, while I am pro-choice, the fact is that men DO have unwanted pregnancies. For when a man's significant other is pregnant, he is pregnant by proxy.

To imply that abortion is a female-only decision and that men need to butt out is archaic, sexist, narrow-minded, and idiotic.

Or realistic. Sorry, fellas, but enough of you walk away that it certainly FEELS LIKE it's the woman's responsibility.

Good men who stick by their partners through thick and thin do have unwanted pregnancies by proxy. And those men are admirable...I would like for there to be more of them around. But men who do not want to deal with the pregnancy do not have to; women do not have that luxury.

The fact is, until men (as a whole) start pulling their share of the birth control burden and/or pushing for abstinence in THEIR OWN relationships, and until men (as a whole) are willing to shoulder an EQUAL amount of the work required to raise a child, men (as a whole) do not have the moral highground to tell women what they should do about unwanted pregnancies.

I applaud individual men who deviate from the standard and who take responsibility for family planning and raising. I applaud men who help their daughters and sisters through tough decisions. It IS best for women not to have to go through this alone.

What I object to is men who butt in to the private lives of women whom they do not know. I object to men who impose a hypocritical moral code onto women, admonishing women for their sexual desires while freely acting on their own. And I object to arguments of "personal responsibility" from men who have taken none of this responsibility upon themselves.

Thank you, Jezebella - you said it better than I did.

James Hetfield (funny that he has the same name as the lead singer for Metallica) did convey a truth in that not havng sex will result in not becoming pregnant.

The main purpose of sex is to reproduce. Sure sex is enjoyable and can bond a man and a woman, but it is in fact meant first for reproduction.

No one should be surprised when they discover that a sexual relation has resulted in pregnancy.

No ones sexuality is being held hostage by stating the simple fact that not having sex assures not becoming pregnant.

No persons sexuality would be held hostage by making it illegal to murder a child in the womb just as it is illegal to murder a child outside of the womb.

You spoke of men not having unwanted pregnancies and I agree with Greg that men do indeed have unwanted pregnancies.

While the female will indeed have to carry the child for nine months and the male obviously will not, the child is no less his than hers.

Is it the nine months which entitles the female to choose if the child lives or dies?

Truth be known abortion benefits men far more than it does women.

The abortion of a child gives the male an easy out and he will not have to live the rest of his life experiancing the same guilt the female will.

He won't have to endure the side effects of the abortion.

Modern abortion is promoted (take some time and research this) and supported by far more males than females.

Worthless men seeking to avoid responsibility love abortion and care little if at all for how that abortion will affect the woman.

Aborting your child does not allow you to avoid being a mother or a father, it simply makes you the mother or father of a dead child.

A child you paid someone to murder.
