Thou Shalt Hastily Approve Pharmaceuticals

Today the FDA halted use of the painkiller Palladone because it causes fatal reaction if taken with alcohol, a fact that has come to light AFTER the FDA approved the drug for domestic use. Can anyone think of any other drugs that have been yanked from the market after being approved by the FDA?

HINT:
  • Antidepressants Paxil and Prozak cause increases in the incidences of suicide and violence
  • Vioxx and Bextra cause heart attacks
  • Antipsychotic Zyprexa causes diabetes

    Just to name a few.

Yet the FDA refuses to approve use of emergency contraception due to "questions concerning whether the actual use data were generalizable to the overall population of nonprescription users." Even though we all know that it had more to do with so-called moral implications. Maybe the Bible said "thou shalt use Vioxx for everyday aches and pains," thus accelerating the approval process and eliminating the need to scrutinize Vioxx's safety data.
